Flag Retirement & Disposal

The proper way to dispose of an American flag is through a dignified and respectful ceremony known as flag retirement. According to the United States Flag Code, when a flag is no longer fit for display, it should be retired in a respectful manner—preferably by burning.

How to Properly Retire an American Flag

Below is a general guide to retiring an American flag with honor and care.

Preparation

Choose a safe, appropriate location for the ceremony, such as a fire pit or designated controlled-burning area. Always follow local laws and fire safety regulations when planning a flag retirement.

Folding

Carefully fold the flag into its traditional triangular shape. This should be done slowly and respectfully, recognizing the flag's meaning and symbolism. See our guide on how to fold an American flag.

Ceremony

A flag retirement ceremony may include the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, or other patriotic readings. The tone of the ceremony should remain solemn and respectful throughout.

Retirement

Place the folded flag onto the fire and allow it to be fully consumed. Those in attendance should remain attentive and reverent during this portion of the ceremony.

Final Respect

Once the fire has burned out and cooled, collect any remaining ashes with care.

Disposal of Ashes

The ashes should be buried in a respectful manner, such as in a designated area or memorial garden. Many veterans' organizations, American Legion posts, VFWs, and scouting groups also offer flag retirement services and can assist with proper disposal.

Community Flag Retirement Services

Flag retirement ceremonies are often conducted by veterans' organizations, scouting groups, and other community groups that specialize in patriotic traditions and flag etiquette.
